WORKSHOP No 1:  SATURDAY, 13th DECEMBER.

FULL DAY with lunch provided AED 600.

COLOUR VIBRATIONS IN ABSTRACT ART

This workshop will explore the emotive and powerful use of colour in abstract art, using watercolours and acrylics. The abstract design will be based on a choice of Arabic motifs found within the vicinity of the Majlis Gallery as well as a variety of Arabian water and coffee pot shapes , beaten copper designs and other examples of geometric based, Islamic motifs. Lynda will work alongside students and help those who feel uncertain of their drawing abilities. The workshop involves sophisticated Colour Theory that is based on the emotive use of colours by the famous artists such as Matisse, Kandinsky and a more contemporary artist Leanne Vernie, who specializes in colour vibrations. The workshop will involve a mixture of taught colour theory, issues around abstract design and technical know-how, including the application of gold leaf. All students are expected to go home with a completed painting by the end of the day.

Beginners as well as more experienced painters are welcome.

Each student should bring:

One piece of large watercolour paper Size: 56cm X 76 cm (22”x 30”) The paper must not weight less than 500 gms. The heavier the paper you can get, the better, Emirates Trading, has an excellent selection of heavy watercolour paper. This paper may be smooth or textured as you wish.

A selection of large and small brushes suitable for both watercolour and acrylic. NOT hard oil painting brushes.

A synthetic bath sponge, not a natural sponge

A tube of relief outliner. This is used for outlining on glass art. Emirates trading will also have this.

WORKSHOP No 2: Sunday, 14th DECEMBER

MORNING with coffee/tea break AED 350.

USING PENCIL AND WATERCOLOUR FOR SELF PORTRAITS:

Portraiture often causes some concern and doubt with art students. However,Lynda will teach an easy approach to portraiture , based on a system devised by Leonardo da Vinci who deduced that the human face could be divided into a system of halves. As a step by step guide, students will draw their self -portraits and then learn about mixing subtle, transparent colour tints from watercolour paints, to add to the drawing. If you have always wanted to learn how to paint portraits, but a fear of the unkown and a lack of confidence has held you back, this is your chance to learn and overcome that unnecessary fear!

Each student should bring:

A mirror approximately but not less than 30 cm by 40cm. which can stand on the table in front of you (Ikea has lots of suitable mirrors)

A sheet of watercolour paper not weighing less than 140 gms/300lbs and measuring approximately 50cm by 40cm . Paper with a texture is best, rather than smooth. The Bockingford or Langton watercolour paper, sold by Emirates trading is recommended.

A 2B and a 4B drawing pencil with a soft kneadable, putty rubber. (NOT a school pencil rubber as this will damage the surface of your paper)

Watercolour paints tubes and a fine, small and medium size watercolour brushes. The necessary portrait colours will be: Cadmium Orange; Burnt Umber, Alizarin Brown Madder; Burnt Sienna, Rose Madder; Paynes Grey; Raw Sienna; Naples Yellow, Cobalt Blue.

Daragh Dulra

daragh
Daragh’s interest in photography originally developed while scuba diving in 1992, when he was awestruck by being under water and the sights he beheld. Life under the sea was like another world, where he made an instant and profound connection with nature.
Determined to share this experience, Daragh bought a Canon camera, now a thirty year old model that he still uses, and began taking photographs. Aiming to capture nature’s finer detail and convey some of it’s abstract beauty, Daragh’s work is a gentle reminder for us to appreciate our beautiful planet.

In 2007, Daragh embarked on a photographic expedition to the Sahara in Morocco and the glaciers of Iceland, in order to take photos of the contrasting climates and conditions. A collection of these images was then launched as an acclaimed exhibition called Sand & Ice.

Jewellery Box – Ireland’s Hidden Gems, Daragh’s latest work, shows his evolution as an artist and his continuing development as a professional nature photographer. The concept of a rock pool portrayed as a Jewellery Box is an idea that Daragh has brought to life with these images and brings us closer to the wonders of Ireland’s seashore.

Daragh has exhibited throughout Ireland, the United States and Europe. Private collections are held in Ireland, UK, France, Holland, Belgium, South Africa, Hong Kong, Dubai, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Daragh sells his work under the banner of Dúlra Photography which he established in January, 2003.

Guided by Gaia

A Visual Exploration of a Scientific Hypothesis and our Contribution to the 2014 Art Season, Sikka Art Fair and UAE Green Festival by Lynette Ten Krooden and Daragh Muldowney On Saturday 15th of March The exhibition will continue until 28th of April

The Gaia Hypothesis, also known as Gaia Theory or Gaia Principle proposes that Earth is itself a self regulating complex organism that has the ability to interact with other organic and inorganic substances to maintain and repair itself in optimum condition in order to harbour life.

Man is arrogant enough to see himself as the pinnacle of life on earth and as such has a responsibility to work with Gaia to keep this little blue dot alive and in great shape. If man fails this obligation Gaia will simply remove him.

Lynette ten Krooden

My training as an artist and an archeologist has given me a total fascination with the earth, its formations and the ever changing eco systems. Systems that are often influenced by mankind , but hopefully never completely destroyed or altered by him.  Gaia will always rejuvenate herself…she has time and millions of years experience on her side. We are a mere tiny blib on a tiny dot in the vast universe, after we have left, Gaia will still be restoring  herself.

I always say that we need a compass on our arm not a watch because we cannot do anything about the universal systems of Time and Space. We are only visitors here, Gaia tolerates us, nurtures us and gives us the wonderful opportunity to experience her micro and macro cosmos.

In this show, Guided by Gaia I will be presenting paintings on old damaged recycled vinyl records, discs with both sides painted and presented on acrylic stands. This will be accompanied by paintings of my signature gold leaf, sand and oil technique. The work will focus on the elements of our world, earth and moon, water and stone etc. I will again visit the endless photographs  and notes which I have been gathering over 30 years of documenting and looking at the landscape, while travelling like a modern-day nomad form South Africa to the deserts of the north and  the water landscapes of the south . All the while Guided by Gaia

Daragh Muldowney

Long before I picked up a camera I have felt my eyes being ‘Guided by Gaia’. I have always found a sense of belonging to and connected with nature. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to step into nature’s majesty and be immediately present. I believe there is healing in this process.

If we take a walk on a beach, up a mountain or in a forest there is a feel good emotion that we all get to some degree or another. I believe if we focus on this feeling, meditate on it, we can heighten the moment to a point where it can become a form of therapy.

For me it is the small, all too often overlooked detail that can bring the deepest healing. It is at these moments of pure connection while I stare into beauty that I find I can create my strongest work.

So, armed with a camera I set out to capture my connections with and love of the natural world. I am attracted by sensual lines, vibrant colours, purity and simplicity. My aim is to present imagery that induces a feeling of peace and calm within the viewer, a sense of awe at and responsibility for the world we live in.

Dancing in the Wind and Playing with Fire

An exciting juxtaposition of Photography by Diane Aftimos and Naked Raku Ceramics by Celia Potoudis Macpherson. Both new artists to The Majlis Gallery but ones we are delighted to welcome to the fold.

We met Diane through Alison’s daughter in law Kate who works with Diane’s brother Roy, this was in late November. We loved her enchanting photographs and were even more convinced of the synergy of doing an exhibition with her when a few days later Celia walked into the gallery with 2 of her  dramatic pots.
